Tesla Delivers First Semi Trucks to Pepsi

Posted By Kerry.Hershey

Tesla’s 1MW megacharger with ‘immersion cooling technology’ was also revealed yesterday.

Five years after it was first announced, Tesla delivered its first production Semi trucks to Pepsi yesterday, which it promised to do back in October.

The delivery was accompanied by a live stream on Twitter from the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada featuring Elon Musk, who had not long finished attending a Neuralink live stream. We don’t know how many Semi trucks PepsiCo received yesterday, but the company has ordered 100 of them.

The Semi was first revealed back in November 2017 and advertised as having a 500-mile range with a million-mile guarantee. The range can’t compete with existing diesel-powered trucks, but the Semi holds the promise of zero-emissions while hauling up to 80,000 pounds of cargo. The reason it has taken five years to roll off the production line mainly seems due to a lack of batteries.

As Electrek highlights, the Semi event included a “one more thing” moment. Tesla unveiled its new megacharger fast-charging technology, which will offer 1MW DC fast-charging for the Semi using “immersion cooling technology” for very high output while retaining a small form factor.

What we don’t know yet is how quickly a megacharger can recharge a Semi’s batteries for another 500 miles of travel. However, anyone who has pre-ordered a Cybertruck will be happy to hear they can use the megachargers, too. Tesla intends to make them available at Supercharger locations in 2023.
